Every teacher runs their classroom a bit differently. Read below to find out the special way our classroom works!
HOMEWORK FOLDER & AGENDA
Your child will bring home their homework folder and agenda each night. One side of the homework folder will contain papers that can stay at home. The other side will contain homework papers or forms that will need to be returned the next day. I teach my students to return all forms and homework in their folders instead of handing them to me to ensure they all end up in the same place! Agendas will have homework assignments written in them each day. Please check these each night to see what is expected of your child. When their homework in complete, please initial in the space provided.
BOOK BAGS
Your child will be bringing a book bag home each night. In this bag will be a level book they can read independently. I want them to have books they can enjoy sharing with you, not struggle with. On Fridays, they will have a level book and a choice book. The choice book will most likely not be at their reading level. I want students to love books, which can mean picking a fun book with great illustrations. You have the weekend to sit down and read these choice books with your child. Also inside the book bag, will be your child's reading log. Please write down the number of minutes your child reads each night. Our goal in second grade is 10-20 minutes each night. For more information on reading logs, read the note that will come home in your child's new book bag or click on the Homework tab on the Home Page.
BEHAVIOR
Our behavior system in the same as your child had in first grade. If they show outstanding behavior, they can move up. If they make poor choices, they will move down. There are rewards and consequences (listed below) for their behaviors. We want the classroom to be a place where everyone can learn! The goal each day is green. Moving up is the exception, not the rule. Know your child had a good day if they are green or above. Students do have the chance to work their way up if they turn their day around after making a poor choice. It gives them something to work for! Your child will color a circle in their agenda to mark what color their day ended on. If below yellow, I will staple a note for you to sign and return. Listed below is the break down of the color system. There are many colors, so it's best to remember orange and red will have a note from me.
Purple=Outstanding! Blue=Great Job! *Green=Ready to Learn! Yellow=Think About It Orange=Teacher's Choice Red=Parent Contact/Notify Office
*Remember: Green is the goal!
SNACKS
Our class will have a monthly snack calendar. Please remember our school is looking for healthy choices in our snacks. Sending in items like crackers, pretzels, and fruit are preferred since this will help satisfy hunger and not lead to a sugar crash. When it is your child's birthday, feel free to send in a special snack that day! We all forget things from time-to-time. If it is easier, you can send your child's nonperishable snack on the first of the month. I can hold onto it for you so your child can share it on their day (and you don't have to worry that you forgot!)
Below is a list of ideas for healthy choices in snacks: Crackers Pretzels Chex Mix Bananas Apples Oranges Carrots Celery w/peanut butter Muffins Bagels Granola Bars Popcorn (light butter) String Cheese
STAR STUDENT
At some time in the school year, your child will be our class's Star Student. I will send home posters the week before for your child to complete. He or she will share their poster with the class at the beginning of their Star Student week. Please feel free to help your child complete these. Second graders are always excited to show off what they did! On the last day of your child's Star Student Week, they may bring in a special toy or keepsake they want to share. NO ANIMALS are allowed at school per the district policy. Stuffed animals, scrapbooks, and medals are perfect for show-and-tell!
