Welcome to our Economics Unit Project!
Preplanning Questions: What standards will be covered? I am planning on using the subject of economics for a PBL project in my classroom. The project will cover the following standards: Essential Standard: 2.E.1 Understand basic economic standards. Clarifying Objectives: 2.E.1.1 Give examples of ways in which businesses in the community meet the needs and wants of consumers. 2.E.1.2 Explain the roles and impact producers and consumers have on the economy. 2.E.1.3 Summarize the concept of supply and demand. 2.E.1.4 Explain why people and countries around the world trade for goods and services. 2.E.1.5 Explain how money is used for saving, spending, borrowing, and giving. 2.E.1.6 Summarize the role of financial institutions relative to savings. What technology resources are available? I am fortunate to have a number of technology resources available to my students. In my classroom I have 5 Chromebooks and 5 iPads (which would mean 1 for every pair of students). In our school we also have 2 computer labs available on a sign-up basis. For presentations I have a Smartboard and projector. My students are quite comfortable using these pieces of technology because they have used them daily throughout this school year. How long preparation of instructional resources take? Due to this being the first PBL project I am planning, preparation of instructional resources will take 3-4 weeks. I would like to add links to my classroom website to help my student with their first exploration into research. I will also want to use our school and city library to gather informational books for students. What other resources are available for the planned project? In addition to the technology and print resources our school has, I would also like to involve examples from our community. We have visited our local newspaper for a tour in past years. I would like to coordinate a trip to the newspaper, but have the focus of the trip be about the economic side of running a newspaper company. Also, the former mayor of our town has offered her time, in previous school years, to come in and talk to students. It could be interesting for students to learn about the economics of running a town from her as well. What is the planning time frame for a PBL unit? According to the reading, I should take 3-4 weeks (25 minutes each day) to plan for my first PBL project. Due to the timing of the unit and the end of our school year, however, I may need to move that time frame up a bit. I don’t want to rush the process, but may spend a few days working longer than 25 minutes to ensure I can have my students experience this PBL project this school year.
